The Importance of a High Quality Food for Your Working Dog (By Ryan Kay of FarlaVale Gundogs)

The dog-food market is a minefield for anyone trying to seek out the right food for their dog, but there are several factors that you should consider.

IMGP0014 (2)

We at FarlaVale have dogs of all sizes and ages and we also have breeds that differ incredibly in terms of energy levels and activity. These are the main influencing factors that help us choose the right food for our dogs, but whatever the breed or the disposition of the dog, the product ingredients should still be of a high quality and that’s a very important factor when considering the right food. For example, there are different types of protein, with the proteins found in quality meat being far superior to those found in oats or other grains used in some dog foods.

Having had horses for nearly 40 years, we were fully aware of the excellence of the TopSpec products, and like other conscientious horse owners we’ve relied on their feed balancers to keep them in good shape all year round. Successful racing yards feed the best product to their horses. Britain’s top athletes eat the best foods so they can perform at their peak, so why do many of us often treat our dogs like a mobile dustbin? If you feed your dog the best food, it should result in your dog looking its best, feeling its best and with the right handling, it should be able to act and concentrate at its best! Feeding it anything else means it is making do!

IMGP0255 (2)

So for us, the VetSpec range, which is produced by the team behind TopSpec, means we can select the right food, for the right breed at the right time of life! Hard hunting and active working dogs need enough nutrients in the tank to keep them going and to be able to deal with the harsh British weather on a long day in the field. If there aren’t enough of the correct nutrients in their diet, then energy levels and indeed concentration levels can drop dramatically. The latter can be an area which is often overlooked. High quality protein and fat levels are essential to keep the dog’s brain switched on to the task at hand. If you’re feeding a quality product like VetSpec, then it’s one less thing to worry about. Any transgressions in the field are then down to our training and handling, not down to the food they’re on.

Reshot - Calm & Focused

Our spaniels work on shoots and compete at different levels; all are fed on VetSpec Calm & Focused Formula complete dog food. We feel this really suits an active breed like this. A young cocker uses endless calories from expending excitable energy! They’re often wired to the hilt when it comes to training, but with the supplement of ‘Calm & Focused’ already added to the food in the right quantity, it feels like it lends a hand thoughout the exercises; with the high quality proteins and fats further contributing to their overall performance. We also feed this to our Hungarian Vizsla, and noticed a huge difference in her concentration. For our puppies we use VetSpec Puppy & Junior Formula. Again, feeding them a top quality food with high quality ingredients feels like we’re really looking after them and giving them the best start in life. We use positive reinforcement methods through treat training and having some of their regular VetSpec kibble on hand has proved to be enough of a treat to shape the final result.

Reshot - Puppy & Junior

VetSpec Calm & Focused Formula is a super, premium dog food containing 60% chicken with added vegetables and herbs and no added colours, preservatives or artificial flavours. It is cereal-grain-free and the formulation includes tryptophan, prebiotics and magnesium together with biotin and other associated nutrients

It is ideal for dogs that get anxious and over-excitable or suffer from separation anxiety or fear of loud noises like guns and fireworks. It is also very helpful when training young dogs to improve on their focus and obedience.

Six Top Tips for Gundog Training from Ryan Kay

  1. Don’t move on before it’s nailed on! Ask any gundog trainer worth their salt, and they will tell you that the most common reason for failure is moving on before the basics are fully established. Make sure the basics are solid and the foundations are cemented before moving onto the next step. For example, if your dog won’t sit to the whistle in a training environment, it most certainly won’t sit to the whistle on a shoot day when exposed to the delights of game!
  2. Don’t bore the dog! This goes hand-in-hand with number one. Yes we want things nailed on, but equally we don’t want to bore its socks off – so keep it fun! Doing the same thing day in, day out, won’t train your dog, it will simply bore it and it will start to switch off and begin to invent its own game.
  3. You’ll hear it time and time again….all dogs are different. So if they’re all different, why do so many of us train every dog the same. You need to try and recognise what sort of dog you have; is he a hard-headed or soft natured dog? Is he completely biddable or perhaps a little detached and aloof? The next thing is to adjust your training accordingly to bring out the best in the dog. Unsurprisingly I’d recommend involving a good trainer to help recognise the different positive and less desirable traits and tailor a training programme accordingly.
  4. Sieve through the advice! If you’re the kind of person that can collect data in your mind and sieve through it….separating the good advice from the rubbish, then you’re onto a winner. Take it all on board…listen to everyone, read the books and watch the DVD’s but in the end, being able to filter through information and then applying what is relevant / helpful to your dog will undoubtedly develop you more as a handler and it will enrich your training experience also.
  5. Measured exposure! Don’t just throw your dog in at the deep-end! Literally! I’ll take introduction to water as an example. I hear of folk who just chuck their dog in and then wonder why it’s developed a fear of water. A warm day, some clean and still water and an inviting and gradual entry will do the trick. Wander in with your wellies or waders on and then encourage your young pupil to follow suit. Then slowly increase the level of exposure. He’ll be leaping in from the bank in no time. I say this many times to my customers – “If you go forward very slowly, enabling your dog to achieve everything you introduce, you’ll actually find yourself progressing very quickly.”
  6. Remember your objective. I’m sure you started off with a requisite for your dog, but as time goes by, things can slip a little and you end up putting the dog into situations that are not conducive to achieving your end goal. Try not to make excuses or lose sight of that. Always have your objective in mind and ask if what you’re teaching him right now is contributing to your end target?

Teddy’s Trim Again With VetSpec SuperLite Low Calorie Formula!

Teddy – a working Cocker Spaniel – was bought as a puppy from a game keeper in Yorkshire and it was love at first sight for owner, Sally Paybody.

But when Teddy was just six-months-old, he developed a limp which, after veterinary investigation, was found to have been caused by one of the bones in his left front leg had stopped growing, causing the over bone to bow. This meant Teddy had to have an operation to cut, pin and plate the bone. Although he was still a pup, he was a very good patient, being very compliant and making a full recovery after several months.

However when he was two-years-old, he started limping again and had to have the pin and plate removed. This meant he had to be exercised on a lead and as a consequence, he gained weight.

Teddy (Before losing weight)

Teddy (Before losing weight)

Sally was advised to put him on a diet and so decided to try VetSpec Superlite Low Calorie Formula – a brand new food which contains an outstanding veterinary specification supplement within a cereal-grain-free, super premium dog food including 50% chicken with added vegetables and herbs, but providing 20% less calories (compared to a normal food) when fed at the recommended amounts. This meant Sally could control Teddy’s weight but still feed a delicious feed, packed with the high quality vitamins and minerals that he needed on a daily basis.

Teddy needed to lose about 4kg and so Sally monitored his diet carefully, cutting down on snacks and continuing to exercise him as much as his disability allowed. He was weighed and measured every week at the vet’s and in about eight weeks he was back to his ideal weight of around 17kg.

Now that Teddy has reached his target weight, Sally is able to maintain it by changing from VetSpec SuperLite Low Calorie Formula onto one of the regular VetSpec maintenance adult foods and opted for VetSpec Omega-3 Joint Mobility, due to Teddy’s ongoing mobility issues.

Said Sally: “Teddy is keeping his new weight well withVetSpec Omega-3 Joint Mobility Formula which is an integral part of his ongoing maintenance treatment. He’s a loveable dog with a great sense of humour and despite having lots of invasive procedures at the vet’s, he still loves going there!”

VetSpec SuperLite Low Calorie Formula is ideal for dogs like Teddy that need to lose weight as well as less active dogs and greedy dogs that need the recommended rate of a dog food but with less calories. It contains biotin and other associated nutrients to greatly improve the coat and promote a supple skin. Prebiotic fibre and herbal sources help maintain gut health and it is wheat gluten- free, with no added colours, preservatives or artificial flavours.

VetSpec SuperLite Low Calorie Formula complete dog food is available in two sizes: 2kg (£13.94) and 12kg (£49.94).

Nutmeg, a ten-year-old Jack Russell/Border Terrier, was rehomed by Sandra Hardie three years ago and was an extremely difficult dog to feed. This cereal-grain-free, super premium dog food is rich in DHA and EPA (Omega-3 fatty acids), glucosamine and chondroitin at levels only normally found in veterinary grade supplements. It also contains biotin and other associated nutrients to greatly improve the coat and promote a supple skin.

Kodi Toes The Line With VetSpec Calm & Focused

Kodi, an eight-year-old Beagle, had always been a strange character.

Said her owner, Emma West, from North Lincolnshire, “The breed is well-known for its reputation for delinquency and selective deafness, and being a hunting dog they can also be prone to wanderlust, but Kodi seems to have difficulty with communication. It’s almost as though she doesn’t understand what people and other dogs are wanting from her. She has always been very wary of strangers and almost nervous of them and was quite reactive to other dogs when on walks.”

Kodi 2

Emma, who is a dog trainer and qualified animal behaviourist, decided to try VetSpec Calm & Focused.

VetSpec Calm & Focused is a canine supplement that can help improve your dog’s concentration and obedience, reduce fear of loud noises, strangers, travelling, and help with separation anxiety. It is specially formulated by experienced nutritionists with scientifically proven ingredients including tryptophan, a natural precursor of serotonin, and the yeast products FOS and MOS to help maintain a healthy gut environment. It is wheat gluten free with full traceability of all ingredients.

VetSpec Calm & Focused

VetSpec Calm & Focused

Said Emma, who has owned Kodi from a 10-week-old puppy:  “We put her on VetSpec Calm & Focused in August 2016 and I can’t believe the difference in her! She has responded really well to the supplement and is much more sociable on walks, more willing to interact with people and more loving. She’s not as wary of new people in the house – before she would bark continuously but  now she may have a quick bark but immediately comes up to greet them. She even offers her belly to be rubbed now and that’s something that she would never do before. Of course we still continued with her usual training but Calm & Focused has really improved her confidence and calmed her down, and because she’s calmer, she is more willing to listen too.”

VetSpec Calm & Focused can simply be added to your dog’s normal feed. A 500g tub will last a 20kg dog for 12 weeks. Also available in a 200g tub (4 weeks supply for a 20kg dog).

Missy Wins VetSpec Dog of the Year’ Competition!

11-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Mischief, or ‘Missy’ as she is more often known, has been crowned ‘VetSpec Dog of The Year’ in a national photograph competition run on Facebook.

After winning ‘VetSpec Dog of The Month,’ Missy went forward into a national final and was voted the overall winner by followers online to take the annual title.

Said Missy’s delighted owner, Jen Poulton-Dean from Somerset, “I am thrilled that Missy has won this competition. She will be 12 on 4th May and I have had her since she was a nine-week-old puppy. She used to be my partner in crime when I was a freelance equine groom, coming everywhere with me and thinking that anywhere we went was her own personal land – a typical Jack Russell Terrier!”

“We now both lead quieter lives. I work in an office and had a baby daughter seven months ago so Missy has taken on the role of stay-at-home nanny to Florrie, a job that she’s not overly sure about!”

“Missy enjoys living in the Somerset countryside which gives her the opportunity to be very active. She loves swimming in the summer, taking walks along the beach and, of course, sleeping in her favourite bed. She’s a massive personality and a big part of my family. She thinks she owns the world and likes to keep everyone in order if they’re getting a bit boisterous!”

Jen gives Missy VetSpec Omega-3 Joint Mobility + Gravy to help optimise her joint health and flexibility. It contains high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids along with glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and antioxidants.  When mixed with warm water, the supplement produces a delicious gravy which can be poured over your dog’s food and can help tempt the pickiest of feeders.

Said Jen’ “Missy loves the gravy and it encourages her to eat up.”

VetSpec Omega-3 Joint Mobility + Gravy is ideal for older dogs with joint disease, dogs that have had skeletal injuries, dogs recovering from orthopaedic surgery and also fit and active dogs in hard physical exercise.

Boodie Enjoys Life With VetSpec

12-year-old Lurcher, Boodie, had always been very fit and active throughout her life.
img_1485

Being half Greyhound, quarter Deerhound and quarter Border Collie, Boodie is built for speed. Her favourite pastime was racing around in the field alongside the river, as well as furtive food-stealing ventures in the kitchen! However, over the past year she had started to age rapidly. She became stiff and was disinterested in life in general, whilst also sleeping for long periods of time.

Her owner, Rachel Newborn, from Swaledale, North Yorkshire, decided to try her on VetSpec Senior – a specialist canine supplement for older dogs.

senior

VetSpec Senior has been formulated by experienced nutritionists with scientifically-proven ingredients including vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and provides complete micro-nutritional support and a full joint supplement.

Rich in glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin to optimise joint mobility, VetSpec Senior also contains pre and probiotics to help maintain gut health. It is wheat gluten-free and has full traceability of all ingredients.

It’s a great supplement for elderly dogs, dogs with reduced mobility, dogs showing signs of senility, older dogs that are losing condition, dogs needing gastro-intestinal support and those recovering from surgery or veterinary treatment.

Said Rachel: “VetSpec was very easy to give to Boodie – I just mixed it in with her normal food.”

“Since being on VetSpec Senior she seems happier all round. She is bright and alert, always up for a run in the field at home and even chases the odd rabbit! (However she still hates little girls in pink dresses…!”)

The VetSpec range is available in 200g tubs (4 weeks supply for a 20kg dog) or 500g tubs (12 weeks supply for a 20kg dog).
